Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a key parameter in the diagnosis of diabetes, as HbA1c reflects the average blood glucose level over the past 3 months.
About a decade ago, the WHO(2) concluded that HbA1c can be used as a diagnostic test for diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) is recommended as the threshold for diagnosing diabetes.
The HbA1c test is an essential component of systematic diabetes management.

HbA1c is defined as hemoglobin A that is irreversibly glycated at one or both of the N-terminal valines of the beta chain.
